Empire Development: Oliver Rundkampf

To even out the genders in my portfolio and connect with the idea of balance, I decided to include a male character to the roster of characters affiliated with the imperial faction. The idea of the character was a knight who was honourable yet merciless in combat and very loyal to his mistress,Violet De Vidtierras.
I wanted him to have muscular body and perhaps a broken mind with a heart of gold. The Hound from Game of Thrones was an inspiration for this character.
He started out as a character who went through hell and came back to relive a second life. However that had me answering too many questions which made things more complex.

He was meant to be a character who originally started at the lowest point in society survived and rose through the ranks from nothing proving that you can achieve anything.

My original background for him was that he was raised in a lower class setting and he made a living being a factory worker. Until he met Violet De Vidtierras while she was inspecting her father's workforce. The two developed a relationship but her father, Charles De Vidtierras was not happy. Violet's father feared that her relationship with an imperial "inferior" would hold her back from allowing her to express her true potential. Charles broke them up and forbade them from seeing each other. However he questioned if he was right in doing so. He then decided to speak to her lover and asked him if he would be interested in joining his rebel cause. However at this point the Empress learned of Charles' treachery and sent a assassin posed as an Anglodian spy to hunt down Charles. The spy succeeded in this but was killed by Oliver, who tried to provide medical attention for Charles. Charles dies in his arms and then Violet came across the scene. Believing that Oliver murdered her father, Violet lost control and drew a sword into Oliver, killing him. It was here she came across the spy's corpse and realized her mistake. Violet was so guilty of this act, she no longer let her temper get the better of her and developed a hatred for Anglodia. However it is unfortunate that this would never come to light if she knew the truth.

Oliver thought he was done for when Violet murdered him, but it wasn't to the end. The Empress ensured that. She saw potential in him and allowed him one wish, His wish was to be at Violet's side .
However even with his wish being fulfilled, he felt that he did not belong in this world.

Character Traits

Oliver is respectful for others. He dislike's the inequality among the Imperial masses and is are of the empire's corruption. He has shown this by saving Imperial soldiers of lower class and deserting higher ups by punishing those who have failed and covering up their deaths as casualties of war. On leave, he likes to enjoy imperial sports that are poplar among the Imperial nobles. He enjoys fencing and prefers a sword to a modern military rifle.
He has visited Violet on many occasion and during this time he has seen her change over the years and also watched as her Daughter Tiffany grew into a young woman. It would be considered that Oliver see Tiffany almost like a daughter.

In short, the set up for Violet's past was this:

  • Boy meets girl
  • boy is poor, girl is rich
  • girl's dad disprove
  • girl gets angry and causes act
  • girl is guilt and swears to never let her anger get the better of her.
  • boy stays at girl's side through this rough time.

or

  • Boy meets girl
  • boy is poor, girl is rich
  • girl's dad disprove
  • dad causes break up
  • dad reconsiders
  • asks boy to join this cause
  • assassin comes in and kills dad
  • boy kills assassin
  • girl finds boy over dead dad, jumps to conclusion
  • girl gets angry and causes act
  • girl kills boy but then finds assassin body
  • girl is guilt and swears to never let her anger get the better of her.
  • boy resurrected by villain in new body

The second idea could work as the Empress is an enigmatic figure and one of these abilities could be that she can bring a loved one back from the grave. or place the mind into another body. The second option here seems more plausible. The only problem is I wanted him to be alongside Violet afterwards. the other body idea could work. After his death, he came back as a different figure with a new personality. He came into Violet's life so hat he could be with her. He knows that he should use this opportunity to be what he couldn't be in his previous life. Eventually he chooses that he wants to be remembered as his new self.

He gets the girl and fortune but he's not happy.
This has been a major challenge to fix so far.

However  I have decided to shorten this character's background down to a reasonable level. I could keep a hold of these ideas for future projects.

Triangles and circles were recurring shape motifs that I wanted to have in this character.

Oliver Silhouettes

The original image I had for the character was him carrying his helmet under his shoulder with his head held high. He was supposed to he a high ranking soldier in the Imperial military and I wanted to give some suggestions of confidence and pride through his posture. I also wanted his helmet removed to show that he is a person and not a featureless individual.

I look at this for referencing the hand on his hip.

Oliver Character Mood board

I looked at Colonel Radec from Killzone because in Killzone, the Helghast were a broken nation who were exiles to a world in which they grew stronger and formed a superpower. I wanted Oliver to be a figure who has proven his place in society but also that he has the opportunity to discriminate between those who don't deserve their upper class state and help those who are less fortunate.

Colour Scheme Iterations

When I worked on the character, I wanted him to have the colour purple in his colour scheme to show his affiliation to the faction. I also considered the use of circles and triangular shapes to connect with the Imperial faction's motifs.
